Painting Contractor, Pressure Washing, East Hampton NY, 11937, Painting, Power Washing, Tips, Blog
Welcome to another edition of the O’Shea
Experience! Today the personnel were
divided into two teams to accomplish a large volume of work at two locations
simultaneously. Staying adequately hydrated
and ensuring that there was enough of the proper equipment at each job site
proved essential, and valuable. Working
hard on a hot Friday was a great way to wrap up a week which included driving
rain and severe thunder. Maximizing
company resources allowed for both job sites to achieve significant progress in
the preparation for the exterior
painting that has to be done.
At both locations, pressure
washing has already been done, and at one, there’s a second story to the
home which still requires some cleaning to be ready for the sanding stage. In order to properly pressure wash the second
story of the client’s home, we will need to set up our scaffolding and planks,
so we can safely reach and work. We will
apply our cleaning solution with a pump sprayer, and then wipe down with a
rag. Using a small pump sprayer to apply
the solution enables the work to be done quickly and efficiently, with minimal
loss of fluid due to drip or accident.
Once the entire surface has been properly cleaned, then we can go ahead
and power-wash the windows and fascia on the second floor and then sand that as
well.
At Michael O’Shea
& Son Painting, we pride ourselves on being the best at everything we
do. We can meet all of your home
maintenance and improvement needs. Give

Protecting Exterior Paint

Protecting Your Exterior Paint:
Here at Michael O'Shea and Sons Painting we know from experience that ultraviolet rays, moisture and the constant fluctuation in temperature are the main causes for deterioration of finished exterior surfaces of your home. However, did you know there are ways to combat these obstacles by using the right products in the right places, and at Michael O'Shea and Sons Painting, we have the solutions.
Sunlight breaks down the binding agents leaving a powdery residue that will get washed away in high wind and rainstorms. The end result is faded coloring and a stressed out protective coat that is left weakened and will not last long. Eventually moisture to penetrate the surface causing severe damage to the under-laying wood if left untreated for any period of time. This is totally preventable with the right finish the first time around.
There are a few factors that will keep a house from excessive peeling. The first stage is the prep work. Using a pressure washer will insure that all areas that are going to be painted will be clear of all peeling paint, mildew, and grim. Pressure washing is best completed a few days in advanced to allow the wood to dry. Once this is done, it's time to prime. We like to lay it on thick! Depending of your surface, you have the choice of oil-based primer, or acrylic-based primer. You may even choose a primer that is tinted to match the paint color. Once the first primer is applied, it is wise to use 2 coats of a top quality 100% acrylic latex paint.
Expansion and contraction come hand-in-hand with ever changing temperatures. This too causes more severe damage to your home. Again preventable with the right paints and sealants. Choosing high quality products combined with good surface preparation we can help you prolong the life of your finished look and extend the longevity of your home.

Exterior House Painting

PEELING PAINT:
A surface problem creating coating issues is peeling paint. The severity depends on the problem and the paint may need stripped or removed from the surface by sanding it clean down to a smooth surface, a sound base where the paint can adhere.
Unfortunately, when the entire surface is covered in peeling, cracking or blistering paint the removal can be very difficult and too time-consuming to consider. This when a clear blinding sealer is the weapon of choice.
These clear binding sealers act like"glue in a can" and seep into cracked, peeling and blister surfaces to glue them down, formimg a tight bond that stops future peeling. Ideal for Interior and Exterior areas, they pentrate and bind chalky residue and act as a flexible bridging primer to seal face checking and preventing paint for cracking.
Making small jobs look great without a lot fuss and minimal work. They can be used on previously painted windows frames, doors, fences, gutters, fascia, soffits and more. For larger-area pojects these clear binding sealers can save time which is money, preventing additional peeling and the life of your paint job.

Painting Contractor East Hampton NY, The Right Tools For The Job Part 2

Using Solvents
Solvents work by giving the paint the proper consistency. They keep the ingredients in a liquid form. They also act as a "carrier" for the binders and pigments. Oil-based paints use thinner as a solvent(petrochemical distillate). They are the most hazardous because the solvents are toxic and flammable. Latex and acrylic paints use water as the primary solvent making them much less hazardous.
Binders
Binders are one ingredient that is absolutely required. The binder is the part which eventually solidifies to form the dried paint film. Typical binders include synthetic or natural resins such as acrylics, oils, polyesters, melamines, polyurethanes, or latex. Linseed oil, alkyd resins, or tung oil are the primary binders for oil-base paints and 100% acrylic or vinyl acrylic are the binders for water-base paint.
Addtional, there are other additives that help make paint of higher quality. The additives can make the paint flow better, reduce bubbles, control consistency, and control thickness, transparency, sheen, drying time, absorption rate. Keeping it in mind that high quality paints also contain mildew inhibitors and ingredients that minimize splattering and running.
Always remember that to use a paint of good quality will make the surface more abrasion-resistant, easier to clean, durable, long lasting and capable of washing without the risk of removing any of the paint. High quality paint is definitely a great investment.

Using Quality Paint
When it comes to painting, about 93% percent of a good paint job is in the preparation. This, however, doesn’t mean that the other 7% should be ignored. Preparation gets the surface ready for paint, but if the paint isn’t of good quality then it will soon fall apart from cracking, peeling and chipping. The quality of the paint, therefore, is vital to a good, long lasting paint job. Furthermore, the more you know about what makes good paint good will improve the chance that the job will be a good one.
Paint contains three main ingredients: pigment, solvent and binders. The pigment provides the texture, color and the hiding properties of the paint. Titanium dioxide and iron oxides are pigments that are used in better quality paints. Also you will find clay and silica being used, but these pigments don't hold up as well. The texture of the paint is a good way to determine if it’s of good quality or not. Cheaper pigment materials, such as clay and silica, cannot be ground as finely as the better ones.
A very simple way to test whether paint is of good quality or not. It is sometimes referred to as the touch test. Once you have selected a paint product and shook it well, you should then remove the lid and put your index finger and thumb into the paint. Then rub the paint between the tips of your fingers. If it feels gritty then it probably contains a inexpensive pigment or a lot of cheap filler such as clay. Quality paint will feel smooth and silky. http://www.MichaelOsheaPainting.com
